Ableism in the Body

THE CORE CLAIM: repeated social experience can become embodied — not just remembered, but held physically.

REMEMBER: this isn’t only individual history. Culture builds embodied patterns too.

Beyond the individual body

Classical body psychotherapy tends to locate bodily adaptation inside one person’s history — a family, a specific relational injury. Disability-informed practice has to widen that. If everyone around a disabled person consistently over-helps, stares, patronises, or punishes visible frustration while rewarding visible gratitude, that’s not a quirk of individual psychology. That’s an environment actively shaping what a body learns is safe to show.

What repeated ableism can produce, physically

Real, observable patterns can develop from repeated ableist experience: a startle response to unsolicited touch or “help,” a held breath before entering unfamiliar or inaccessible spaces, a face arranged into practiced patience before a difficult conversation with a professional, a jaw that tightens automatically at certain phrases (“you’re so brave,” “I could never do what you do”), a habitual scan of a room for exits, seating, or danger before the body can settle. None of that is caused by disability itself. It’s caused by what disability has repeatedly been met with.

Why the distinction matters clinically

Treating this pattern as purely individual — something to resolve through inner work alone — can quietly let the actual, ongoing source of it off the hook. Working with an ableism-shaped bodily pattern sometimes means genuine internal processing. It can also mean advocacy, boundary-setting, or simply naming the pattern’s real origin rather than treating it as a personal flaw to dissolve.

Mine — Yours — Ours — System

Mine

What bodily reaction do I carry that has an old, specific origin worth understanding?

Yours

Is this specific person actually treating me the way my body is bracing for?

Ours

What’s actually happening between us right now, separate from any old pattern?

System

Is there a genuine, ongoing pattern of ableism producing this reaction, that deserves to be named and challenged directly?

For therapists

Resist the pull to treat every embodied ableism-response as purely intrapsychic material. Some of it is an accurate, physically-held record of real, ongoing mistreatment — and the most clinically honest response sometimes includes naming that plainly, alongside whatever inner work also helps.

A question worth carrying

Is this bodily pattern telling the story of what happened to me, or is it being asked to disappear before the thing that caused it has actually stopped?
