Self-Advocacy Script Library

FOR DISABLED PEOPLE

Self-advocacy
script library.

Language for the moments that are hardest to find words for in the moment itself. These are starting points, not scripts to follow word for word — adjust the tone and specifics to fit you and the situation.

Requesting an accommodation

“I’d like to make this work for both of us. Could we [specific change]? That would let me [what it enables for you].”

Explaining an access need without over-justifying

“This is what I need to be able to take part fully. I’m happy to answer questions, but I don’t need to justify it further than that.”

Correcting an assumption

“Actually, that’s not quite it for me — what’s true is [correction]. It would help if we worked from that instead.”

Talking to a therapist about disability

“I want to be able to bring my disability into this work without it becoming the only thing we talk about. Can we find that balance together?”

Requesting more processing time

“I think better with a bit more time. Could we slow down here, or could I follow up in writing afterwards?”

Declining an unsuitable suggestion

“That doesn’t work for me. I’d rather we try [alternative] instead.”

Requesting an accessible document or format

“Could you send this as [format] instead? That’s the version I can actually use.”

Negotiating with a carer or family member

“I appreciate you looking out for me. On this one, I’d like to make the call myself — I’ll let you know if I want help.”

More scripts will be added here over time. See also Resources for Disabled People and Internalised Ableism.
