Dance/Movement Psychotherapy
At a glance
Dance/Movement Psychotherapy uses movement itself — improvised, mirrored, or structured — as the primary therapeutic medium, working from the premise that psychological and physical processes are directly interconnected and that movement can express and process what words sometimes can’t.
What it’s asking the therapist to do
Often to mirror a client’s movement, attune to its quality and rhythm, and use movement itself as the shared language of the session, alongside or instead of speech.
The disability question
This field has, in practice, done real work adapting to wheelchair users and disabled dancers — disability dance as an art form has directly influenced how some practitioners think about movement quality and expression. The core reconstruction still applies directly: movement quality, rhythm, and expression exist independent of range or type of motion. A single available gesture, a change in facial expression, or a shift in breath rhythm can carry exactly the same expressive weight in this modality as a full-body dance sequence.
