Forum guidelines
The forum is a place to ask questions and talk about disability and psychotherapy – from the client’s chair, the therapist’s chair, or both. These guidelines help keep it useful and safe for everyone.
The forum is not monitored around the clock and can’t help in an emergency. If you need help now, in Ireland or the UK call Samaritans free on 116 123, or call 112 or 999 in an emergency. In Ireland you can text 50808; in the UK, text SHOUT to 85258.
What the forum is for
- Ask & Answer – questions about therapy, access, theory or practice. Others can answer, and the person who asked can mark the most helpful answer.
- Discussion – sharing experience, ideas and reactions to pages on the site.
- There are separate spaces for people in or considering therapy and for therapists and trainees, plus shared spaces for everyone.
What it isn’t
- It isn’t therapy, and posts aren’t clinical, medical or legal advice – including posts from therapists.
- It isn’t a place to find or advertise therapy services. Please don’t promote your practice, products or courses.
Looking after yourself
- The forum is public to read. Share only what you’d be comfortable with anyone seeing, now or later.
- You can use a username that isn’t your real name.
- Think before naming people, services or places. Don’t share anything that could identify someone else.
- If a conversation becomes too much, it’s fine to step away.
Looking after each other
- Take people’s accounts of their own bodies, minds and lives seriously. Don’t question whether someone is “really” disabled or ill.
- Disagree with ideas, not people. Different views on language, models of disability and therapy approaches are welcome.
- Respect the words people use for themselves.
- Offer experience rather than instructions. “What helped me was…” usually lands better than “You should…”.
- No harassment, discrimination, hate speech or sexual content.
For therapists and trainees
- Never post anything that could identify a client – even with names removed. Discuss themes, not cases.
- Follow your own professional body’s guidance on online conduct and confidentiality.
- When replying to people who aren’t therapists, answer as a fellow forum member, not as their therapist.
How moderation works
- A new member’s first post is checked before it appears. After that, posts go live straight away.
- Posts that break these guidelines may be edited or removed, and accounts may be suspended. Where possible we’ll explain why.
- If a post worries you, use the Report button or the contact form.
- The forum is run by one person, so moderation isn’t instant.
